Benz Hui Dies at 76 From Cancer-Related Organ Failure

Veteran Hong Kong actor Benz Hui has passed away at the age of 76 after suffering cancer-related organ failure.

According to Hong Kong media reports, he passed away peacefully today (Oct 28) at 2.30am, surrounded by family and close friends.

His passing came just a day after reports surfaced that he had been critically ill, prompting several celebrities including Bosco Wong, Charmaine Sheh, Dayo Wong, Raymond Lam, Michael Miu and his wife Jaime Chik, to rush to the hospital to see him. Movie legend Chow Yun Fat also made an appearance at the hospital early this morning.

Benz’s family thanked friends and fans for their concern and condolences, adding that the details of the funeral arrangements will be announced later.

Benz’s illustrious acting career began in the 1970s and spanned more than five decades, during which he took on a wide range of memorable roles across television and film.

He was best known for his portrayal of Foon Hei Gor in TVB's Line Walker series, and Inspector Wong in the 1999 hit movie Running Out of Time.

Although he was often cast in supporting roles, Benz’s natural charisma, comedic timing, and versatility made him one of Hong Kong’s most beloved and respected character actors, earning him the affectionate nickname “King of Supporting Roles.”

In recent years, Benz had scaled back on his acting commitments and relocated to Singapore where his family owns a $4mil home in Yishun.

Known affectionately as “Benz Gor”, he was also famous for being a devoted family man to his Singaporean wife Angeli and their daughter Charmaine, 29.

After Charmaine married Singaporean banker Shane Sim in 2023, he embraced his semi-retired life, focusing on family and supporting his daughter’s career.

Benz reportedly invested “HK$6-7mil" (about S$1mil-$1.2mil) to support his daughter’s entrepreneurial ventures in Singapore, where she opened three cafés and bakeries.
