How stunned did Denise Camillia Tan look when Jam Hsiao called out her name as one of the Top 10 Most Popular Female Artistes at Star Awards 2023?

In the immortal words of Chen Tianwen, she was “stunned like vegetable”.

See?

You would have the same look too if you were the 30-year-old Mediacorp actress, who wasn’t one of the hot faves to make the list.

But on stage, she looked every bit the winner in her siren red bustier gown .

The award is Denise’s first Star Award since joining Mediacorp in 2017, and in her speech, she caled it “the most precious gift [she has] received since entering showbiz”.

She also broke down in tears when she addressed her parents, who live in Malaysia. She said in English: “Mum and dad, if you are watching this, I love you so much. I hope I make you proud.”

Her speech was what you would expect of a first-time winner: heartfelt and filled with more emotional ups and downs than an episode of Hear U Out.

When 8days.sg spoke to Denise after her win, we wondered how many times she practiced her speech at home.

“This is very embarrassing,” she laughs. “I practiced it so much that even when I slept, I would think about it.”

Does she do the same thing every year?

“No… just this year,” she says. “I wasn’t nominated last year. And two years ago, I got nominated for the first time and I thought to myself, “If I don’t win, it’s fine”. But this year somehow I manifested it. I told myself I’m going to win this and I really got it so I’m very happy!”

For past Star Awards, Denise would be in the audience, watching her colleagues go on stage to receive their awards. We ask if that feeling was unbearable.

“I wouldn't say it was. I also know it’s very challenging and tough to even make the [Top 40] list,” says Denise. “So when I got nominated this year and two years ago, I felt like my hard work and everything was finally getting recognised. That was enough for me to celebrate.”

But surely nothing beats winning, right?

“Being up there is crazy,” she smiles. “It feels so surreal.”
