Carina Lau Says Tony Leung Depends On Her For Everything, Even Changing A Light Bulb
Carina says her husband is too shy to even ask their domestic helper for help, relying on her whenever he runs into a problem.
It’s no secret that Tony Leung isn't exactly the most outgoing celeb.
Over the years, the 63-year-old Hong Kong star has been open about his social anxiety, with wife, actress Carina Lau, often stepping in as his biggest cheerleader.
Now, Carina, 60, has shared another adorable glimpse into what life with the screen legend is really like — and let's just say, Tony relies on her for a lot more than emotional support.
Appearing on Carol Cheng's talk show The Do Show, Carina revealed that as Tony gets older, he's become even more dependent on her in everyday life.
According to Carina, Tony has been well taken care of since he was young, to the point where he’s become a little helpless with everyday tasks. He's even too shy to ask their domestic helper for help.
“For instance, if a light bulb blows, you either replace it yourself or call someone to do it if you don't know how. But he'll just say, 'Carina Lau, the light bulb is broken,’” she said.
"Whenever he runs into a problem, it's immediately, 'Quick, save me!'"
When Carol asked if she enjoys taking care of her husband, Carina admitted she had simply fallen into the role.
"I'd like someone to take care of me too!" she joked. "I'd also like my husband to immediately change the light bulb when it breaks. But somehow, this is just how things turned out."
Besides running the household, Carina also plays Tony's unofficial therapist.
She shared that whenever he has to travel overseas to promote his movies, he gets overwhelmed by the endless publicity schedule and wonders why he has to do so much.
That's when she steps in, encouraging him to enjoy the interviews, go out for a nice meal or have a drink instead of dwelling on the pressure.
"If not, he'll stay focused on the negative emotions, and it'll be very hard on him," she explained.
The couple have been together for 37 years, including 18 years of marriage, though Carina admitted she never imagined they’d make it this far.
She said the "seven-year itch" was their toughest hurdle, and there were many moments when they considered giving up.
“I think it's love," she said. "There are many things you can let go of — money, fame — but love is very difficult to let go of."
She added that a lasting marriage comes down to appreciating each other's strengths and forgiving each other's flaws.
And before anyone thinks Tony is the only difficult one, Carina was quick to admit she’s no picnic either.
"I've got a bad temper. Sometimes he has to put up with me," she says.
Carina also recalled veteran actress Lin Ching Hsia telling her: "I know it's hard being by his side, but bear with it because you've made him who he is. He's a very rare actor."
Looking back, Carina says she's proud to be Tony's biggest supporter.
"I respect him so much as an actor," she said. "Even if I weren't his wife, I'd still admire him."
