Bosco Wong’s childhood wasn’t the easiest, but it’s taught him invaluable life lessons.

Recently, the 45-year-old Hong Kong actor spoke about his childhood, revealing: “[My parents] were divorced before I was born. I think I only saw [my father] again when I was in primary school.”

“My mum had to work, so he came to look after me here and there, or brought me out for meals on the weekends.”

Bosco, however, surprisingly wasn’t too affected by his family circumstances.

“I thank God that I wasn’t unhappy just because I had such a family or was in such an environment. I genuinely don’t think it was a blow to me,” he stressed.

He elaborated that this could be because his mum had taught him to be independent from a young age.

“In a single-parent family, I had to take care of myself. That is a mentality that I’ve had all along,” he said.

The actor recalled that he also travelled to and from school by himself.

“At most, my dad would come and fetch me once in a while. When I was in Primary 1, I was already taking the bus home myself,” said Bosco.

On top of that, his mum came home late every night because she was working two jobs.

“During the day, she worked as a clerk. At night, because there were no computers back then, they needed people to take stock manually. That had to be done after the shops closed, so she always came home around midnight.”

Despite their circumstances, Bosco never held a grudge against his dad or felt angry with him. His father passed away from lung cancer in 2015.

“He’s gone now, but back then I would visit his house sometimes and say hi to his wife. We would even eat together. If I could see him, then I would,” he said.

“We really didn’t see each other much. But even now, I don’t see my mum often either because I’m always not at home.”
