Netizen Curious Why S'poreans All Carry Backpacks & What They Take To Work — And The Responses Are Surprising
Apparently, many of us tote around entire survival kits in our backpacks.
An overseas Xiaohongshu user recently shared an observation about Singaporeans while commuting on the MRT.
Sharing several photos of backpack-toting commuters at Dhoby Ghaut station, they penned: “Do Singaporeans of all ages and genders like carrying backpacks? What do they usually pack in them when heading to work? It’s quite a distinctive style.”
Now this is new. Who would have thought that of all the traits associated with Singaporeans, our choice of bags would be the one to stand out to overseas visitors?
Local netizens were quick to chime in, listing daily essentials such as an umbrella, a jacket, tissues, and a water bottle — you know, the classic survival kit for Singapore’s unpredictable weather.
Some said they even pack an extra set of clothes in case they sweat during the day and have last-minute plans after work in the evening.
One commenter quipped: “They are heading to work, of course they’ll use a backpack.”
Others pointed out that with the growing trend of hot-desking, many office workers now carry their laptops, chargers, and documents with them, making backpacks the most practical way to bring around these heavier items.
A netizen wrote: “I wish to bring out a small, pretty handbag as well, but my computer does not allow for it.”
Another lamented: “We’re all corporate slaves, nothing we can do about it.”
Responding to the comments, the OP finally understood why locals prefer backpacks, taking close note of the essentials many bring along.
The majority agreed that convenience and comfort are the main reasons for using backpacks. Some said they used to carry shoulder bags but found backpacks much easier to move around with — not to mention the shoulder pain you’re spared from.
As one commenter put it: “Once you start using a backpack, you don’t turn back.”
Perhaps this perfectly reflects the Singaporean tendency to prioritise practicality and efficiency, but hey, that doesn’t mean we can’t still look stylish with a backpack, right?
