Logical, Rule-Abiding & Love Queueing: People Think These Are Traits That Show You Grew Up In S'pore

Is there a way to instantly tell if someone spent their childhood in Singapore?

That’s what a Xiaohongshu user sought to find out in a recent post titled, “What are some unique traits of kids who grow up in Singapore?”

Netizens were quick to jump in with their takes, with comments ranging from highly complimentary to ones that might make us feel a little too self-aware.

A number agreed that Singaporeans are polite — we know when to say “please” and “thank you,” and are proactive about holding doors and lifts open for others.

Some described Singaporeans as “rule-abiding” and “methodical,” noting that we have little trouble following rules and social norms. To them, this makes us logical and efficient, and compared to those who grew up in slower-paced countries, better able to get things done quickly.

They also observed that we "like to queue up" and do so patiently wherever we go.

On the flip side, many also find Singaporeans "simple and uncomplicated". That much might sound like a double-edged compliment, but some did bring up valid downsides to the trait. 

A netizen from China wrote: "Those that grow up in Singapore would get their money scammed in minutes if they came to the mainland."

Another also penned: "Children who grow up in such an environment may have average communication skills, limited creativity and imagination, and tend to be more conservative. They may not have particularly big dreams or strong drive, and end up living fairly ordinary, by-the-book lives."

Essentially, while growing up in Singapore may have helped us adapt well and get along with others here, some believe we might struggle elsewhere, where children are raised in environments that demand greater sharpness and street smarts.

One commenter also pointed out that Singaporeans “like to complain.”

Another quickly explained, “It’s because they’ve learned from a young age that when a complaint is valid, it can actually work in their favour.”

Others echoed the sentiment, adding that while we may like to complain, it’s not necessarily a bad thing as it reflects how well our rights have been protected from a young age.

"It's a common characteristic of those who've grown up in an environment where their needs are heard," opined a commenter.
