On Sunday evening (Apr 19), while most primary school students were prepping for the new school week, Emerald Hill star Ivory Chia was out collecting awards.
The nine-year-old who played young Xinniang in the hit drama clinched, not one, but two awards. The Young Talent and MyPick! The Show Stealer award, the latter of which she cheekily credited her double chin for helping her snag the win.
Not like we were surprised by her haul.
For months after her scene-stealing turn on Emerald Hill, many had already pegged Ivory as a shoo-in for the Young Talent award.
She had been racking up the accolades, previously winning Best Actress In A Supporting Role (Asia-Pacific) at the Asian Academy Creative Awards (AACA) for her performance in Emerald Hill.
Even before her category was announced, Ivory was spotted hyping herself up in her seat, full main character energy, very Taylor Swift at an awards show.
But hey, it’s not every day that you win big at an awards show… at age nine, no less.
When giving her acceptance speech, she even drew laughter for borrowing a hilarious line from Emerald Hill, delivering straight to one of her on-screen “Nya Nyas”, Chen Liping, who won Best Supporting Actress that night.
“I have something I want to tell you. You know you always fart in the show, right? Next time, if you want to fart, you can tell the person next to you, “Farts come from the belly, released to roam the world, who asked you to be so greedy to breathe them in?” she laughed.
When 8days.sg caught up with Ivory just minutes after she had won, she shyly giggled (wait, where is all the bravado from on stage earlier?) and told us how she came up with her wild acceptance speech.
“I was getting ready to go for a shower when it came to mind, then I was like, “Oh! this sounds great, and I quickly ran to my mum asking to let me add it in,” she says.
When asked how she was going to celebrate, Ivory was quick to tell us she wanted to have hotpot, and yes, she already knew who she wanted to have it with.
“I want to have hotpot with my two Nya Nyas,” she said, referring to Chen Liping and Jesseca Liu, who also won Best Actress that night.
“I haven’t asked them, but probably next week,” she quipped.
Alas, all that celebration will have to wait. Despite the double win and post-show adrenaline, Ivory sighs that she still had to wake up early for school the next day.
“I am so happy and really want to continue celebrating what I just achieved. I am at a 100,” she said.
