Chen Liping Stars in Firdhaus’ New Heartbreaking MV, Leaves Singer Flustered
Malaysian singer-songwriter Firdhaus, 27, recently released his new album 619, which closes with a self-penned track titled ‘Maybe This Is The Last Song I’ll Ever Write To You’ (<<也许是我写给你的最后一首歌>> ).
The music video for the song dropped yesterday (Dec 17), and starring in it is none other than local veteran actress Chen Liping, 60.
Directed by Golden Horse–nominated filmmaker Tan Seng Kiat, the six-minute MV tells a heartbreaking story of separation. Liping plays the mother of Malaysian newcomer Moka, with the plot inspired by the real-life experience of one of Firdhaus’ close friends.
Firdhaus also appears in the music video, taking on the role of a messenger tasked with delivering a gift to the daughter.
He revealed that he had volunteered for the role — joking that it was “to save the company money” — before admitting that he had zero acting experience and wanted to learn. He initially thought the role would be simple, but quickly realised otherwise when filming his first scene opposite Liping.
The moment Liping slipped into character and began tearing up, he found himself completely flustered.
“I couldn’t properly grasp the emotions I was supposed to portray,” he said with a laugh. “[Liping] asked whether I understood the message she was conveying, and honestly, I didn’t know how to act at all. It was a really awkward take.”
Still, Firdhaus credits director Tan Seng Kiat for being incredibly encouraging on set, even preparing jokes before each filming day to ease his nerves. He added that if he ever gets the chance to act in another music video, he plans to take acting classes first so he can better express his emotions.
And frankly, who can blame him? Acting opposite Chen Liping on your very first attempt would make anyone nervous.
