The Freshman's Carrie Yeo Becomes Singapore Citizen; Thanks 'National Treasure' Kit Chan For Recommendation Letter

National Day turned out to be doubly special for Malaysian-born musician Carrie Yeo.

On August 9, the 44-year-old member of local duo The Freshman took to Instagram to announce that she has officially become a Singapore citizen.

“After singing at so many National Day events all these years... I’m finally a Singaporean!” she wrote.

“Looking forward to growing old with my people, my home.”

Carrie also revealed that many people hadn't realised she wasn't a Singaporean to begin with.

She moved to Singapore at 13 to study and has lived here ever since.

“In a way, Singapore and I have been ‘dating’ all these years. I finally proposed, and Singapore said yes!!!” she quipped.

In the comments, Carrie thanked local music icon Kit Chan for writing a recommendation letter to support her citizenship application.

“Huge thanks to ‘guo bao niang niang’ [which loosely translates to ‘National Treasure Empress’] Kit Chan for writing a recommendation letter for me,” she wrote, adding several teary-eyed emojis.

While a recommendation letter isn't required for a citizenship application, it can be submitted as an optional supporting document.

“The letter is so well written, I would have given me citizenship just based on that letter. I’ll work hard to live up to it.”

Kit, however, was having none of the praise.

“[You’re] exaggerating! But yes, better live up to it, or I’m gonna whip your ass!” she joked.

Looks like Carrie has already found someone to keep her in line as Singapore's newest citizen.
