MP Baey Yam Keng Hit By Cyclist Riding Against Traffic Flow During His Morning Run

In a Facebook post, Tampines GRC MP Baey Yam Keng shared that he had gotten into an accident while out for a morning run.

The 55-year-old, who's also Minister of State for Culture, Community & Youth as well as the Ministry of Transport, recounted that the incident happened just as he was crossing a usually quiet one-way road.

“I checked out the direction to my right, where traffic might be coming, and proceeded to run across the road when there were no vehicles in sight. However, I didn’t realise that there was a road cyclist coming from my left. I couldn’t stop in time and bumped into her. I fell and landed on my right knee. She toppled but managed not to fall,” he wrote.

He said that the rider had been blocked by a tall bush by the road and added that she was apologetic as she was riding against the traffic flow.

“I should have been more careful and checked out directions before running across the road.  Sometimes, accidents happen due to lapses of attention or oversights. I think both of us had to bear some responsibility. Fortunately, I just had light abrasions,” he wrote.

He ended on a light-hearted note, saying his phone suffered more damage than he did.

Not everyone in the comments section agreed, though. “Riding on the road against the flow of traffic is definitely in the wrong. Speedy recovery, sir!” a netizen quipped.

We can only imagine how the cyclist felt after realising she had collided with a minister.

Other netizens flooded the comments section with well-wishes, with some even suggesting home remedies to bring any swelling down. Some also asked him to see a doctor as a precaution.

One managed to crack a joke (we think?) and wrote, “Wow! Rare to hit MP! If kena PM confirm kena fined.”

Ouch! That looks like a nasty bruise on MP Baey Yam Keng's knee after he collided with a cyclist
Get well soon!
