Tanjong Pagar MP and Minister of State Alvin Tan has just welcomed a furry new addition to the family.

The 45-year-old revealed in a Facebook post on Tuesday (Sept 16) that he had just adopted a 10-month-old Maltipoo from animal shelter Voices For Animals (VFA).

Alvin shared that she was previously named ‘Bak Gei’ (Hokkien for bucktooth) because of her underbite.

“She was unwanted when she was born because her owners thought she was ugly due to her underbite,” he shared.

He and his family decided to rename her Bucky.

“A cheerful twist that keeps a nod to her roots while giving her a fresh start in her forever home. From Bak Gei to Bucky, her journey reminds us that every dog deserves love not for perfection, but for the joy and character they bring. Bucky has now found her forever home with us,” he wrote.

Alvin has been married for 17 years, and has two kids, a son named Joshua, 13, and a daughter, 11.

It seems like Bucky is settling in her new furever home just fine.

In an interview with 8days.sg, VFA founder Derrick Tan says Alvin told him that Bucky is very close to his daughter.

According to Derrick, Alvin first visited the shelter in August to find out more about their work.

“He expressed interest in potentially adopting a dog then. After visiting VFA’s adoption drive in September with his family, he decided to adopt Bucky,” said Derrick.

Netizens praised Alvin’s decision, with many commenting that Bucky's underbite makes her look like she is always smiling.

Others shared pictures of their own furkids, some quirks such as underbites like Bucky, and celebrated the MP’s choice to adopt.

The minister isn’t the only famous pawrent to have adopted a furkid from VFA.

In 2017, Mediacorp actor Elvin Ng adopted a Beagle named Bagel that was about eight years old, while Ah Jie Zoe Tay in 2020 adopted a West Highland Terrier named Snowball, a former breeding dog.
