Simu Liu Believes Late Grandparents Were At His French Château Wedding After Rain Suddenly Stops
The 37-year-old Shang-Chi star tied the knot with record label exec Allison Hsu, 30, at a 17th-century château in France, with Woody Harrelson among the celebrity guests.
It was a wedding straight out of a fairy tale, complete with a French château, celebrity guests and even a little help from the heavens. Or so Simu Liu believes.
The 37-year-old Shang-Chi star tied the knot with Allison Hsu, 30, vice-president of digital marketing at Interscope Records, at the 17th-century Château d'Estoublon in Provence, France, on October 3.
The couple, who have been dating for nearly four years, recently shared details of their lavish wedding with Vogue magazine.
And while everything looked picture-perfect, it was an unexpected change in the weather that made the biggest impression on Simu.
The weather had been unpredictable that day, with intermittent showers threatening their outdoor ceremony.
Guests were still holding umbrellas as the procession began, but just as Allison appeared, the rain stopped.
For Simu, it felt like more than a lucky coincidence.
The Harbin-born actor had been thinking a lot about his grandparents, who died from Covid-19 in 2021.
They had raised him in China until he moved to Canada with his parents at five, and he had been dreaming about them in the months leading up to his wedding.
When a drizzle began just as his parents took their seats, Simu felt his grandparents were watching over him.
"It seemed so coincidental, the timing and the gentle droplets, as if someone was sending reassurance that they were watching," he told Vogue.
"A part of me believes they were with us."
The moment moved him to mention his grandparents in his vows, something he hadn't planned to do.
He told Allison he believed his yeye and nainai would have loved meeting her.
Aww.
The weather wasn't the only thing that got Simu emotional.
Seeing Allison at the aisle also overwhelmed him.
"I couldn't stop thinking about how perfect everything was," he recalled.
Allison wore a gown by Nicole + Felicia, a label founded by Taiwanese sisters Nicole and Felicia Chang — a meaningful choice as her parents were born and raised in Taiwan.
Simu wore a custom tuxedo by Asian-Canadian-owned Garrison Bespoke, paired with a Versace jacket.
Of course, what's a Hollywood wedding without a few famous faces?
Simu's Last Breath co-star Woody Harrelson gave a reading of Blessing of the Hands, a popular wedding poem, during the ceremony, while singer Reneé Rapp performed Etta James' ‘At Last’ for the newlyweds' first dance.
Simu and Allison met at a mutual friend's Fourth of July barbecue in 2022.
Nearly three years later, he proposed on the rooftop of the Shangri-La Paris in May 2025.
And it seems France now holds an extra-special place in their love story.
