Malaysian rapper Namewee has surrendered himself to police in Kuala Lumpur today (Nov 5) in connection with the death of Taiwanese influencer Hsieh Yun Hsin, also known as Iris Hsieh.

The 42-year-old rapper, whose real name is Wee Meng Chee, was believed to have gone into hiding after the case, initially classified as sudden death, was reclassified as murder on Tuesday.

Iris, 31, was found dead in a bathtub at the Banyan Tree Hotel in Kuala Lumpur on Oct 22 while reportedly working on a video project with Namewee.

Police said he is in remand until Nov 10.

Before turning himself in, Namewee shared a selfie outside what appeared to be the police station wearing his signature beanie and a black face mask.

According to Malaysian daily China Press, Namewee arrived at Dang Wangi police station at around 1am, accompanied by several friends and his lawyer.

"I have now arrived at the police station, and from here on, I will fully cooperate with the police investigation to give an explanation to the public and the deceased’s family,” he posted on Facebook.

He also stressed that he would not flee, adding that he had previously faced seven arrest warrants and had always turned himself in voluntarily.

According to reports, Namewee found Iris unresponsive in the bathroom and performed CPR, before contacting emergency services at 12.30pm.

He claimed the ambulance arrived “an hour late", but this was refuted by the Ministry of Health.

Namewee was arrested after police found nine blue pills suspected to be Ecstasy in his hotel room.

He subsequently tested positive for four types drugs and was charged with drug use and possession.

He has denied all allegations, including any involvement in Iris’ death.

China Press later released Namewee’s mugshot, showing the rapper, typically seen wearing caps or bandanas, bald with only sparse hair on top, a stubbly beard, and a tired expression.

Namewee has long been known for his signature beanie look.

In a 2014 social media post, he explained that wearing beanies was part of his personal style, and he usually takes them off when not appearing on camera.

He once revealed he owns at least 500 beanies to wear in public appearances.
