Almost two years after his shocking split from former actress Cindy Au, veteran TVB actor Roger Kwok, 61, is finally ready to talk about it.

In a recent interview, Roger spoke candidly for the first time about the reasons behind the breakdown of their 18-year marriage.

The couple, who tied the knot in 2006 after seven years of dating, are parents to two teenagers — Brad, 17, and Blair, 14. They announced their divorce in May last year, though Roger revealed they had already been living apart for two years prior.

Looking back, Roger admitted that he was extremely accommodating and compliant when their relationship first began.

He said he gave in to her in everything but after six months, she "revealed her true colours" and he began to see her real nature clearly.

Still, Roger was quick to acknowledge his own faults.

He described himself as overly controlling, admitting that he tried to dictate every part of Cindy’s life and expected her to always obey and cooperate with his decisions.

When conflicts arose, he would avoid confrontation and isolate himself, and that made her feel lost and helpless.

The divorce, he said, forced him to re-examine his own behaviour and recognise the areas he needed to change.

Roger also shared that his personality once made him a “terrifying father.”

He was particularly strict with his son Brad, who enrolled at the Royal Academy of Music in the UK last year.

The end of his marriage prompted Roger to reflect on his shortcomings and he now acknowledges that he had been unreasonable toward Brad.

In contrast, he’s learned to take a softer approach with his daughter, Blair.

He recalled fondly that when she was little, she used to fetch his slippers for him. But like most teenagers, she later began to challenge him — something that would have angered him in the past.

When she ticks him off now, he reminds himself: ‘It’s okay. I should try my best to accommodate her.’”

Thanks to this shift in attitude, Blair has grown much closer to her father. Roger expressed deep gratitude for her understanding and support during this difficult period.

Recently, both Roger and Cindy have been the subject of dating rumours.

Cindy was spotted dining with a male friend, while Roger was rumoured to be dating 2023 Miss Hong Kong Hilary Chong, 23 — his on-screen daughter in the TVB drama The Fading Gold.

Roger quickly shut down the speculation, ,likening his relationship with Hilary as "father and daughter".

As for whether he’s ready for a new relationship, Roger said he’s not making any plans. He says he's not make plans for it and he just wants to focus on what he needs to do moving forward.
