Mum Shocked as Her Long-Time Friend Marries Her Daughter Despite 30-Year Age Gap

How old is too old?

Apparently, a 30-year age gap is not old enough. At least for Japanese couple , Mizuki, 53, and Megumi 23, whose bizarre love story shocked audiences on variety show Newlyweds, Please Come In.

Megumi reveals that her mother was a close friend of Mizuki, and that he babysat her since she was five.

However, things took a wild turn in 2022 when a planned movie outing for the three became an unexpected first date after Megumi’s mum overslept.

Is this what they call, you snooze, you lose?

Because the movie outing unexpectedly became Mizuki and Megumi’s first date.

“He was quiet, different from usual, looking like a gentle bear. I found him cute and wanted to see him again,” said Megumi

The then 20-year-old Megumi began asking “Uncle Mizuki” out for dinner, even feeling jealous when he spoke to other women.

"That's when I knew I was in love," gushed Megumi, who eventually confessed her feelings to Mizuki, and the two started dating.

It is not revealed if Mizuki has been married before.

Despite her shock upon discovering their relationship, Megumi’s mum eventually allowed them to date though she opposed the idea of them getting married.

However, the couple still decided to secretly register their marriage in January this year.

On the variety show, Mizaki publicly apologised to his now mother-in-law and said, “Although you once opposed us, now you support us in silence, and I am truly grateful”.

His former friend, now mother-in-law, was in the audience simply smiled and replied, “That is enough already. You two are so in love”.

Despite Megumi’s mum seemingly accepting her daughter’s decision, it seems netizens weren’t convinced, or as forgiving.

“I can feel the mother’s sense of loss and anger. She lost a friend and grew distant from her daughter,” read a comment.

Still, some defended the couple, with one writing, “At least they had the guts to face family and societal pressure. That deserves respect”.
