But its latest offering is pretty unexpected: Kueh Bangkit.

The crumbly flower-shaped cookie, made from coconut cream and tapioca starch, is a popular Chinese New Year snack. But how does it fare as an ice cream flavour? 8days.sg tries it and tells you.

The Kueh Bangkit desserts comprise a Soft ServeCone (from $1.20), McFlurry (from $3.75) and Hot Fudge Sundae (from $2.50).

For some reason, the strawberry sundae option is not offered for this new funky flavour, but we are guessing that the tangy strawberry sauce doesn’t go so well with coconutty ice cream.

Soft Serve Cone, from $1.20 (8 Days Pick!)
Our ‘nice or not’ verdict on this Kueh Bangkit cone? Nice. Perhaps due to the coconut milk or cream used, the soft serve is more luscious and creamier than usual, with a very fragrant santan aroma that reminds us of a cold, ice cream version of — yep — kueh bangkit.
It also doesn’t come with the chalky, powdery texture of kueh bangkit, which we personally don’t fancy. We like this better than McDonald’s previous Coconut ice cream flavour, which we didn’t find coconutty enough.

Hot Fudge Sundae, $2.50
Coconut ice cream and hot fudge ain’t such a bad pairing, but the sticky, overly sweet fudge overpowers the kueh bangkit flavour in the soft serve. The combination is also too rich. Not our favourite.

McFlurry, from $3.75
The Kueh Bangkit soft serve is blitzed with Oreo cookies, which yields the same result as the hot fudge sundae. We can only taste cocoa-flavoured Oreo crumbs and a muted hint of coconut, which defeats the purpose of ordering this lovely flavour.
Available while stocks last at McDonald’s Dessert Kiosks.
