Tay Ping Hui’s Mum Dies Of Pancreatic Cancer At 84: “I Miss You Calling Me ‘Ah Boy’”
The actor’s mum was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer a year ago, and her condition took a turn for the worse two months ago.
Tay Ping Hui’s mother has died after a year-long battle with pancreatic cancer. She was 84.
Yesterday (Aug 13), the 55-year-old actor took to Instagram to share the heartbreaking news, along with a video montage of photos and clips of his mum over the years.
“First, I want to thank the many people who noticed my absence online and showed me much concern,” wrote Ping Hui.
“I have been unable to bring myself to post anything remotely happy because it has been challenging physically, mentally and emotionally over the past few months.”
Ping Hui revealed that his mum was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer a year ago.
“We managed to reduce the tumour a little through radiation and chemo and she did get better for a while,” he shared.
However, her condition deteriorated about two months ago, when the tumour began growing again and the cancer spread to her liver.
As his mum also had dementia, Ping Hui and his family took turns staying with her in hospital.
“It was a very painful and heartbreaking journey. Mum fought hard with everything she had, but left us slightly more than a week ago,” he wrote.
According to Ping Hui’s assistant, his mum died on Aug 4.
Reflecting on his mum’s life, Ping Hui said there was one word that summed her up: “Love”.
“Because mum loved to cook, she loved to eat, she loved to chat, she loved mahjong, she loved her grandchildren, she loved her children, she loved my father, but most of all, she loved life,” he wrote.
“And I can say without any doubt, that we loved her as much.”
Ping Hui ended his post with a particularly poignant message to his mum.
“My sweet mummy. Life without you will never be the same. I miss you calling me ‘ah boy’ and I will miss you until we finally meet again. 妈妈，你等我。”
The Chinese phrase translates to: “Mum, wait for me.”
“Farewell my dearest mummy. I love you.”
Fellow celebs, including Christopher Lee, Pierre Png and Zoe Tay have since left messages of condolence on his post.
