While previous episodes of Kaypoh Room Tours have mostly featured local personalities own their homes in Singapore, the new season kicks off with something different: a rental.

New host and former Star Search finalist Amy Ang, visited local content creator and musical theatre performer Daisy Anne Mitchell, 28, who shares a 1,200 sq ft condo with a friend.

British-born Daisy has lived in Singapore since she was five and has been renting for the past four years.

“This is a condo, it’s an old one, so we’ve got the tiled floor and the big space,” she said.

Located just 10 minutes from Orchard, the unit costs “about S$4,500” a month. Daisy pays around S$2,000, including utilities, which she considers a good deal for the location and space.

Finding it, however, took some work.

Daisy and her housemate viewed “over 30 units in three to four months”. Though the self-proclaimed “Eastie” initially wanted to stay in the East, their current home was simply too good — and affordable — to pass up.

The apartment is furnished with a mix of new and second-hand pieces sourced from places like Carousell and Facebook Marketplace.

“If it were up to me, my entire house would be thrifted,” Daisy said, noting that expats leaving Singapore often sell good-quality furniture for a fraction of what they paid.

How cool is her feature wall?

As for why she shares a home?

Living alone in Singapore is simply “too expensive”.

“If you’re renting by yourself, how much are you earning?” she quipped.

While Daisy would love to experience living alone one day, she enjoys having a housemate.

“I travel a lot by myself, so I take that as my ‘living alone’ time. I love to solo travel, so I know what I’m like in my own company,” she said.

“Living with a friend is wonderful, it’s fun and a good time. You have someone to come home and yap to, you can have friends over, you can party here and not have to go home because you are home.”

Would she ever rent alone in Singapore?

“I think in Singapore, I would always rent with a friend. If I move, hopefully I can rent alone, but again, it depends on the economy. [Things] are so expensive.”

Her biggest tip for anyone considering sharing a rental is to choose your housemate carefully and discuss expectations beforehand.

After all, finding the right home is one thing. Finding someone you actually enjoy living with is another.
