Former Mediacorp actor Chen Xi had his dream wedding when he tied the knot with his Japanese wife Mimi at a traditional shrine in Japan.

The wedding ceremony was held on April 19 at Munakata Taisha Shrine in Fukuoka, which has over 1,500 years of history and recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Chen Xi, 35, son of local showbiz veterans Xiang Yun and Edmund Chen, previously shared that Mimi works in IT, and is “slightly younger” than he is.

While the couple had already held their tea ceremony and solemnisation in Singapore back in July 2025, this long-awaited ceremony was clearly the celebration they had been looking forward to.

Chen Xi had said in an earlier interview that he hoped to get married at a Japanese shrine — and he got his wish.

Sharing snaps from the wedding on Instagram, Chen Xi revealed that despite 95 per cent chance of rain in the forecast, the skies “miraculously” cleared.

The intimate yet meaningful ceremony saw 77 guests flying in from 12 different countries, including the UK, Australia, Chile, Italy, Poland, Korea, Vietnam, Russia, Malaysia and Singapore, so much so that Chen Xi joked that it felt like a “United Nations meeting”.

Because Mimi is Japanese, the wedding followed traditional customs, complete with elaborate attire and rituals.

In an interview with Lianhe Zaobao, Chen Xi revealed that getting into their ceremonial outfits alone took over an hour.

“The outfit is really heavy. There are about four layers, and everything has to be wrapped tightly with belts. It took my wife and me more than an hour just to get dressed,” he said.

Once ready, the couple, umbrellas in hand, made their way to the shrine’s main hall with their guests. There, they performed a simple yet solemn ritual, tossing coins into a prayer box for blessings of happiness and safety, before clasping their hands in prayer.

The day was made even more meaningful given everything the family had been through in recent months. Dad Edmund Chen had earlier been sentenced to five days in jail and a five-year driving ban over a traffic-related case, but was granted permission to travel to attend the wedding.

Meanwhile, Xiang Yun also had to give the Star Awards ceremony a miss — despite being nominated for Best Supporting Actress — as it clashed with the wedding.

She reportedly woke up at 6am to help with preparations, calling it a busy but joyful occasion for the family.
