Taiwan Police's "Fan Bingbing" Officer Reportedly Got 500 Commendations Meant For Investigating Officers, Despite Working A Desk-Bound Role
A Taiwanese police officer who has earned the nickname "the Police Force's Fan Bingbing" for her looks is now under investigation over a rather unexpected controversy. As much as beauty can be a blessing, in her case, it seems it can be a curse too.
According to Taiwanese media, the woman, known as Officer Ding, has become something of a local celebrity. Stationed at the Taipei City Police Department's Xinyi Precinct, she has been the face of police publicity campaigns, featured in the force's digital calendar, and often appears in media reports, which has led to her sizable online following.
Ding, a graduate of Tamkang University's Department of French, reportedly is in an office-based role and handles mainly administrative work.
But despite spending her shifts at a desk, Ding was said to have received more than 500 commendations in one year, giving her a performance record that even surpassed that of frontline criminal investigators.
Under standard police practice, commendations for criminal cases are generally awarded only to officers who have taken part in an investigation. The exception, in Ding's case, sparked complaints from some of her colleagues.
Inside sources claimed that male officers in the Xinyi Precinct's Criminal Investigation Division regularly bought Ding meals, voluntarily shared expenses, and frequently dropped by to check in on her at work.
The biggest controversy, however, centered on claims that some detectives allegedly gave Ding credit for criminal cases they had worked hard to solve, possibly in an attempt to score brownie points.
The Xinyi Precinct later stated that there were procedural errors in the submission process for criminal case commendations, and that the awards given to Ding would be revoked after the investigation is completed.
Authorities are now investigating whether the commendation submissions accurately reflected who worked on the cases, whether Ding was wrongly included as a recipient, and exactly how many commendations she received. The case has also been passed to the Taipei District Prosecutors Office, which will look into whether any document forgery offences took place.
Netizens were left puzzled, with some wondering how Ding could have received 500 commendations without anyone raising questions in the first place.
Some joked she must have really made her colleagues’ days brighter to get that kind of recognition. Meanwhile, others... strongly questioned the comparisons to Fan Bingbing, calling it an “insult” to the Chinese actress.
