There is a right place and time for everything, including when not to take a selfie.

But Chinese-born YouTuber Kenny Chan ignored all sense of basic decency when he posed, filmed, and flashed a peace sign in front of the deadly blaze that has claimed 159 lives as of December 4. 31 people are still missing.

Kenny, who is not a resident of the affected estate, had intentionally travelled to the scene after news of the fire broke.

The inferno tore through seven residential buildings of the Wang Fuk Court estate, turning the area into a disaster zone as families searched desperately for loved ones and pets.

For Kenny, he went further than just uploading his pictures and video online. He added hate-filled captions, claiming the victims were “sinful” and that the tragedy was “retribution.

His posts went viral in Hong Kong, with many slamming it as heartless and dehumanising.

On Wednesday (Dec 3), Kenny was arrested by the Hong Kong Police’s National Security Department for “acting with seditious intent”, an offence that carries up to seven years’ jail.

In a statement sent to the media, the police said his actions and posts “incited hatred, fuelled social division, and caused widespread public disgust”.

This isn’t Kenny’s first run-in with the law.

During Typhoon Koinu in 2024, he was investigated for allegedly stealing a temple cat from the Pak Tai Temple.

He also reportedly stole another customer’s food at a fast food restaurant before fleeing.

It was also revealed that Kenny is a member of the “White Card Alliance”, a group known for extreme and illegal stunts, such as vandalising graves, sending threats, and even attacking police officers and journalists.
