For many, being able to give their parents a better life is one of the biggest motivations to keep working hard.

That certainly seems to be the case for Hong Kong actor Sunny Tai.

The 54-year-old recently shared on Instagram that he had reached a major milestone: buying a home for himself and his elderly mum.

“Mum, this is something that cost me a lot. But, as cliché as it may sound, we only have this life together," he wrote.

Sunny shared that his mum, now in her 80s, had only ever lived in squatter settlements and old public housing.

“You once told me: ‘When I was young, during the war, we lived in air-raid shelters. We even picked sweet potato leaves to eat, just to get through another meal,’” he recalled.

Despite those hardships, his mum always taught him that there was nothing they couldn't overcome together.

“So, for you, this gift is probably a very late gift,” he wrote.

“I couldn’t help it. I’m not particularly capable, and I don’t earn much. I could only scrimp and save like crazy, and eventually just barely manage to make it happen.”

In 2024, Sunny was spotted helping out at a cha chaan teng in Wong Tai Sin, taking orders, wiping tables, washing dishes and even taking out the rubbish.

He later explained that he was helping a friend who owned the eatery while learning new skills, including making coffee and milk tea.

There was one sentimental detail Sunny made sure their new home had.

Their previous home overlooked Lion Rock, a view his mum had enjoyed for many years.

“Now, in our new home, I’ve made sure you can still see Lion Rock,” he wrote.

Sunny added that his mum's resilience and perseverance are qualities he deeply admires and hopes to learn from.

“Please accept this gift. And I hope you can stay healthy and happy every day,” he wrote.
