HK Star Michelle Wai Goes Viral For “Looking Lonely” After Winning Best Actress At Chinese Awards Show
Turns out, the actress had a very relatable reason for making a quick exit.
After winning Best Actress, you might expect a star to stick around and work the room. Hong Kong actress Michelle Wai apparently just wanted to get off the stage.
A video of the 41-year-old quietly leaving the stage at the Hundred Flowers Awards in Beijing on August 10 went viral. In the clip, Michelle is seen with her head down and trophy in hand, while other stars stayed behind to mingle.
Phoenix TV News dubbed the moment “When an introvert wins Best Actress”, while others said she looked “lonely”.
The moment was made even more amusing given what Michelle had just achieved. Michelle, who took home the prize for her performance in The Last Dance, was not only the first Hong Kong actress to win Best Actress at the awards, she had won by a landslide.
So why the speedy exit?
Speaking to reporters at the Hong Kong airport, she explained: “I didn’t know many people there... and the ceremony was already over, so I walked off the stage first."
Michelle said she only knew a handful of people at the event, including Tony Leung Ka Fai and Zhu Yilong.
And despite how lonely she may have looked in the footage, Michelle said she was anything but.
“The floor was a little slippery, so I had to keep my head down and watch where I was going. I wasn't lonely, I was very happy at the time.”
Turns out Michelle is just as low-key offstage.
Despite returning to Hong Kong after making history, she arrived without the glamorous airport look or entourage one might expect of a newly crowned Best Actress.
She even ended up giving her media interview next to the airport toilets.
We stan a low-key queen.
