Woman Suffers Ruptured Spleen And Internal Bleeding After Hula Hooping Post-Dinner

Here's a reminder to always give yourself some time to digest your food after a meal before doing any type of exercise.

Earlier this month, a 28-year-old woman from Zhejiang, China, was rushed to hospital after developing severe abdominal pain in the middle of the night.

According to reports, the woman was admitted to the emergency department at The Fourth Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine at around 1am in a serious condition, with dangerously low blood pressure of 80/50 mmHg.

Her family said she had not suffered any injuries and had only spent some time hula hooping after dinner.

An ultrasound later revealed significant internal bleeding, prompting doctors to rush her into emergency surgery.

During the operation, doctors discovered that she had suffered a ruptured spleen, which was believed to be linked to the exercise she had done earlier.

According to the operating surgeon, the moment he examined her abdominal cavity, he discovered her spleen was completely ruptured, and in his words, looked like “smashed blood tofu”.

Thankfully, doctors were able to stop the bleeding and the surgery was a success. After receiving further treatment, the woman made a full recovery and was eventually discharged to continue resting at home.

The hospital's emergency department later revealed that her case was not an isolated one. Doctors said they had recently treated three patients who suffered internal injuries after using hula hoops.

In one instance, a patient reportedly brushed off the pain as a stomachache caused by something they had eaten, only to later discover that the condition was much more serious.

According to medical reports on spleen ruptures, a person should use rhythmic motion when hula hooping instead of forcefully shaking it and twisting their torso, and stop when they feel sharp pain, dizziness, or abdominal discomfort.
