Man Allegedly Divorces Wife After Argentina’s World Cup Final Loss

While most football fans make harmless predictions before a big match, a Malaysian man decided to raise the stakes by allegedly putting his marriage on the line.

In an article by Malaysia’s Berita Harian, a woman in Malaysia has claimed her husband divorced her after he reportedly made their marriage the stake in a bet on the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.

According to a Threads post by @Raudhah.24, the OP claimed that her husband had allegedly declared before the match: "If Argentina loses, my wife is divorced with triple talaq."

Triple talaq (also known as talaq bain kubra or "threefold talaq") is a form of Islamic divorce in which a husband pronounces divorce three times, either in one sitting or over separate occasions.

Umm… we know how the World Cup final match ended.

When Argentina went on to lose to Spain, the woman claimed her husband followed through on the declaration, leaving her devastated.

The alleged incident has since gone viral, with many expressing disbelief that the outcome of a football match could have such life-altering consequences.

Despite the allegations not being independently verified, netizens wasted no time slamming the man for throwing his marriage away over a single football match.

A former Federal Territories Mufti Datuk Seri Dr Zulkifli Mohamad Al-Bakri weighed in on the matter on Threads.

He explained that under the majority view of Islamic scholars, if someone says something like "If Argentina loses, my wife is divorced with triple talaq", and Argentina does indeed lose, then the condition has been fulfilled.

But he stressed that social media isn't the place to decide whether a marriage has legally ended.

He also urged the couple not to rely on public opinion or social media discussions to determine their situation.

He also urged them to immediately refer the matter to the Syariah Court or the relevant religious authorities, which will determine the legal status of the alleged divorce in accordance with Islamic law and Malaysian legal procedures.

Dr Zulkifli also reminded Muslims to be extremely careful with their words, pointing out that statements made in the heat of the moment, even as a joke, can carry serious consequences.
