Chinese Singer Hua Chenyu Slammed For Letting Cat Lick Chocolate Cake
The viral clip has sparked debate among netizens, with some questioning his awareness of basic pet care.
Chinese singer Hua Chenyu just can’t seem to stay out of controversy.
The star is under fire after an old clip showing his pet cat licking a slice of chocolate cake resurfaced online.
The video, which features lighthearted moments with his cat Perper, was originally shared on February 28 on Xiaohongshu as part of a post celebrating his 36th birthday.
In the clip, captioned “Per eats first”, Perper approaches the slice of cake and takes a lick.
When a netizen commented, “Cats can’t eat chocolate,” Chenyu replied, “It’s just a few licks.”
Screenshots have since circulated widely, drawing criticism from pet owners.
Many pointed out that chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, substances that cats cannot properly metabolise. Even small amounts may lead to vomiting, rapid heartbeat, or even organ damage.
Some netizens questioned whether Chenyu had knowingly allowed the behaviour, criticising what they see as a lack of basic pet care awareness.
In response to the earlier wave of backlash, the singer posted another video showing the cat active and healthy, reassuring fans that it was “lively and well, don’t worry.”
The issue, which had appeared to die down, regained traction on April 21 after being widely reshared, quickly climbing to the top of Weibo’s trending list.
Online reactions remain divided, with some calling for greater responsibility from public figures, while others defend Chenyu, saying the cat acted on its own and was not deliberately fed chocolate.
