Celeb Chef Wu Sihan Threw Up Into The Sea After Getting Seasick While Filming; Says Sharks May Have Been Nearby
You'd think a chef's job is simply to stay in the kitchen and whip up delicious dishes. But that's not the case for Mediacorp celebrity chef Wu Sihan.
The 33-year-old head chef of family-run bistro Supply and Demand spent 10 days in Western Australia last October filming Mediacorp's food-travel programme The Catch, which explores local ingredients and traces them back to their source.
Recalling the experience, Sihan spoke candidly to Zaobao.sg about some of the unexpected challenges he faced while filming the show.
One of the toughest moments came during the second episode, when he went out to sea on a fishing boat for the first time. Before diving into the water to collect abalone, he became seasick and vomited.
"I took seasickness medication that morning, but the fishing boat was small and the waves were rough. I suddenly felt nauseous and couldn't help turning around to throw up into the ocean," he said.
And yes, the cameras kept rolling.
"The director asked me: 'Can we film this?' Since it was a reality show, I said okay," he recalled.
Looking back, Sihan joked that he might have been actually "feeding the sharks".
Not long before filming, a dead great white shark had been discovered in the area and reported in the news, so he assumed sharks were likely nearby.
Although he felt unwell, he still dived into the ocean and continued filming.
He knew the water temperature was only just above 10°C, but the moment he plunged into the sea, it felt much colder than he had expected.
Surprisingly, the sudden chill helped ease his nausea.
On another occasion while filming in the forest, Sihan watched a cameraman climb a 75m tree with filming equipment in one hand.
"It felt like the locals were incredibly fearless. I saw the cameraman climbing with a camera in one hand, so I followed him. I couldn't embarrass myself, right?" he laughed.
"Halfway up, it started raining. Everything became wet and slippery, and that's when I realised my legs were shaking."
Despite being a professional chef, Sihan isn't the primary cook at home.
The chef married Mediacorp actress Tay Ying on June 15, 2025, after dating for five years. They moved into their marital home about eight months later.
Although he spends his days cooking professionally, Sihan is more than happy to let the missus be the "head chef" at home.
He says he enjoys it when she cooks for him because it gives him a sense of warmth and family.
"She makes a kimchi udon dish that's really delicious. It surprised me. And it's not just me, friends who have tried it all say it tastes great."
He also praised Tay Ying's culinary skills and potential, particularly her natural instinct for seasoning and her ability to learn quickly.
One time, when she wanted to make banana bread but didn't have a blender, she creatively used a mortar and pestle to mash the ingredients instead, which left him thoroughly impressed.
"I'm a chef, and even I never thought of using a mortar and pestle that way. She's incredibly creative!" he effused.
