She Cycled Alone To Jurong Point At 2am For Supper; Netizens Say It Shows How Safe Singapore Is
Content creator Jaedyn Choo didn't want to pay for food delivery, so she cycled to the mall instead. But what really caught viewers' attention was that she felt comfortable making the late-night trip alone.
Singapore has long enjoyed a reputation as one of the safest places in the world. So much so that content creator Jaedyn Choo had no qualms about cycling alone to Jurong Point at 2am for supper.
The 21-year-old, who goes by @jaejaepeanut on Instagram and TikTok, recently documented her late-night trip after deciding she'd rather ride there than pay for food delivery.
Jaedyn cycled through the quiet streets, admitting she wasn't even sure if the mall would allow dine-in customers at that hour.
Fortunately for her, Japanese restaurant chain Sukiya was still serving customers, and staff even offered her a fan while she enjoyed her rice bowl.
But her midnight outing didn't end there.
After finishing her meal, Jaedyn popped into the mall’s 24-hour FairPrice supermarket, where she picked up a drink, a tray of pork belly, and even made herself some personalised name stickers.
"At 3am I got my supper, I got stickers and I got a drink. It's a complete success," she declared, adding that she'd bring her neighbours along next time.
While some viewers were surprised at the mall’s late-night offerings, others were more struck by something else: that a young woman felt comfortable cycling to the mall alone in the middle of the night.
One Instagram comment, which has racked up more than 5,000 likes, read: "When your government takes care of you so you can actually be outside at night! As a woman!"
Another, with more than 3,000 likes, said: "If a woman's cycling at 2 in the morning to grab food, it shows how safe this country is."
Many overseas viewers said the video reminded them what they missed most about Singapore, while one quipped: "Meanwhile in Australia all the cafes close at 2pm..."
A TikTok user from the Philippines said the video made them envious, joking: "Cries in Philippines."
However, not everyone agreed with the sentiment.
Some pointed out that women should still exercise caution, with one commenter writing: "Actually there were cases of women getting raped after midnight at secluded spots."
Another replied that while "crime will always exist", Singapore is "in a pretty good place" compared with countries where many people don't feel safe going out after dark.
Others also advised Jaedyn to avoid dark or secluded routes and to continue taking precautions during her late-night cycling trips.
