Allan Wu Says 21-Yr-Old Daughter Was Invited Back To SpaceX For Second Internship

We can confidently say Allan Wu is extremely proud of his two kids.

During a recent appearance on The Rojak Room podcast, the 54-year-old host proudly shared an update on daughter Sage Wu, 21, who is currently studying at Stanford University.

Sage and younger brother Jonas, 20, are Allan's children with ex-wife Wong Li Lin. The former couple, who were both prominent faces in local showbiz, married in 2003 and divorced in 2013.

And judging from what Dad had to say, their daughter has been rather busy.

"My daughter right now is in university and doing so well, you know, just thriving there too. She's going to Stanford, she's going to do her second internship at SpaceX, [and] just bought her first car with her internship money,” Allan said on The Rojak Room.

Speaking to 8days.sg, Allan elaborated further on Sage's internship plans.

"Sage was actually invited to return for this second internship from SpaceX. I can only assume that means she left enough of a positive impression for them to ask her to return again so soon,” he tells us.

"The fact that she decided to return to SpaceX only means that she must have really enjoyed her time there the first time," he adds.

According to Sage's LinkedIn, her first stint was a 12-week Hardware Development internship in 2024, where she worked on developing a power-electronics printed circuit board aimed at improving the efficiency of a satellite system.

As for what she'll be working on this time, even Dad doesn't know.

"Sage isn't at liberty to share due to the nature of her work, so I know as much as you and everyone else does. That being said, I am sure it is something cutting-edge and fun for her,” he tells us.

On LinkedIn, she lists her second internship role as an RF Engineering intern, and has been there since June this year.

She is also working towards both a Bachelor's and Master’s degree in electrical engineering at Stanford.

In fact, Allan tells us that he remembers overhearing Sage on a video call with her professor and classmates while they were discussing a school project.

"I did not understand any of it and felt like a completely new language — and that's when I realised this person is really on another level in terms of what she is learning now,” he says.

Allan never imagined Sage would end up at Stanford or SpaceX.

In fact, he'd pictured her becoming a Golden Bear at his alma mater, UC Berkeley, also known as Stanford's rival.

"This wasn't really on my radar when she was growing up," he tells us.

Sage eventually gravitated towards STEM, and Allan says Stanford's strength in the field and its Silicon Valley location made it a natural fit.

On the podcast, Allan also mentioned how Sage had bought her first car — a used Mazda CX-50 Hybrid — with the money she'd earned from her internship.

"I was actually shocked and so proud that she was able to do this all by herself, especially at this young of an age," Allan tells us.

For the record, Sage and Jonas still receive an allowance from their parents. But Allan suspects that won't be the case for his daughter for much longer.

"I do believe Sage will be financially independent sooner than I would have thought at the rate that she is going," he says.

Has she started treating Dad now that she's making her own money?

"Hahaha. No, not yet,” he laughs. "That is her hard-earned money, so she should spend it however she would like.”

As if juggling Stanford and SpaceX isn't enough, Sage has also built a sizeable following online as a content creator with over 258K followers on her Instagram account @sagecadence, focusing on engineering topics, no less.

And despite Dad having decades of showbiz experience, Sage hasn't needed his social media advice. "She has done this all by herself," Allan says.

Oh, how the tables have turned.

Interestingly, Allan says there weren't necessarily signs when Sage was little that she'd end up in electrical engineering.

"Not to my knowledge," he says.

Interestingly, Allan says Sage wasn't obviously an "engineering kid" growing up.

On The Rojak Room, when asked whether her academic prowess came from him or Li Lin, he paused before admitting: "I would say it's probably more from her mum."

So what did Sage get from Dad?

"Maybe what not to be like?" Allan jokes, before taking a more serious turn. “I would like to think that she has learned to work hard, be nice to people, and to value her health and wellness. Plus, she learned to be a kick-ass swimmer, runner and basketball player.”

Of course, not forgetting his second child, Jonas, who Allan says he is equally proud of.

He shared on the podcast is now a naval officer and was recognised for his physical fitness during commissioning.

With a dad like Allan, are we that surprised?

Seeing both kids forge their own paths is what Allan seems proudest of.

With Stanford, SpaceX and a rapidly growing social media platform all on her plate, does Allan worry Sage is taking on too much?

"I have been worrying about that since she was in high school. But she has exceeded every expectation I have ever had for her,” he says.

On The Rojak Room, Allan also spoke candidly about his divorce from Li Lin and the pride he takes in how their children have grown up.

"Obviously, I wish everything worked out with me and my ex, but then hey, to see how our kids turned out despite how messed up their parents are, couldn't make me prouder as a father. They're great kids. They work hard, but I think the most important thing is they take nothing for granted from me and from their mom too,” he says.

And does Sage know Dad has been going around telling podcasts, and now us, how proud he is of her? Probably not.

"She is so busy that I doubt she knows," he says.

"As long as she is happy, healthy and doing what she loves to do, then I am already a proud and happy father. And there's no greater joy and pride than seeing your children thriving.”
