Not Your Usual Heartthrob: Netizens Are Swooning Over North Korean Figure Skater Ro Yong Myong’s Retro Good Looks

We don't exactly get a steady stream of North Korean celebrities and athletes appearing on our social media feeds.

So when photos of one particularly good-looking North Korean figure skater started making the rounds online, people took notice.

Photos of the Ro Yong Myong, 25, have recently been circulating on South Korean online communities, where his looks have sparked plenty of discussion. 

While many swooned over his looks, one commenter claimed Yong Myong's features reminded them of old photographs of Koreans from their grandfather's generation.

Adding to the fascination is Yong Myong's decidedly old-school appearance, which some say looks like he belongs in an entirely different era.

More specifically, the '80s or '90s.

And we kind of see it.

Yong Myong wouldn't look entirely out of place as the leading man in an old Hongkong movie.

One netizen even saw "a hint of Andy Lau" in his features.

Okay, we wouldn't go that far.

But old-school leading man? Sure.

Born in Pyongyang on November 14, 2000, Yong Myung began skating in 2006 and represents the Pyongyang Railway Sports Club, according to the International Skating Union.

He was also one of just three figure skaters North Korea sent to the 2025 Asian Winter Games in Harbin, China, where he competed in the men's singles event and finished sixth.
