Talk about an awkward misunderstanding.

A Chinese tourist recently became the talk of the internet after a business trip to Malaysia took an unexpected turn.

While having breakfast at his hotel, the man noticed something that didn't sit right with him. The restaurant was decorated with rows of national flags, including Norway, Mexico, Argentina and Germany, but the Chinese flag was noticeably missing.

Believing China had been deliberately left out, he became upset and firmly declared: "If you want to earn money from Chinese customers, then you should first hang our flag."

He then called over a hotel staff member, curtly asking her to “come here” before questioning why the Chinese flag had been left out.

The staff member, seemingly caught off guard by the sudden question, appeared unsure at first. “I think inside,” she replied, as she, too, tried to figure out where the flag might be.

The man then continued to press his point, insisting there was “no Chinese flag” and reiterating his point: "If you want to make money from Chinese people, please fly the national flag of China."

The clip quickly made its rounds online, with sharp-eyed netizens pointing out that Malaysia’s national flag was also missing from the display.

They soon figured out the flags were not meant to represent every country, but were part of a World Cup-themed decoration featuring only the 48 national teams that had qualified for the tournament.

Since China’s national football team did not make it to the World Cup, its flag was understandably absent from the display.

Ironically, what the tourist thought was a patriotic stand ended up backfiring, with netizens mocking the misunderstanding.

Many urged the tourist to understand the theme behind the hotel’s display before getting upset and calling them out online.

Others poked fun at the situation, asking: “Did China’s football team qualify for the World Cup?”

Some also joked: “This is the World Cup, not the United Nations."

While many felt there was nothing wrong with the tourist being patriotic, they believed a little more understanding of the situation could have prevented the awkward moment altogether.

The takeaway? Maybe check the lineup before asking why your team’s flag isn’t on the field.
