Planning a late-night date or romantic stroll? Traditional superstitions say you might want to think twice.
Hungry Ghost Month is here, bringing with it plenty of traditional beliefs and superstitions. This year, it runs from Aug 13 to Sep 10.
You probably know the usual taboos, like avoiding staying out too late or disturbing offerings on the ground, lest you attract or offend wandering spirits.

Yep, apparently even your love life has Hungry Ghost Month rules.
Better safe than... scared?
-
Don’t call out each other’s names in open, deserted areas.
According to superstition, calling your partner's name in an open, deserted place could attract wandering spirits — potentially leading to hauntings or even sleep paralysis.
-
Don’t pin your partner against the wall
Even the classic 'kabedon' is apparently off-limits. The term refers to pinning your partner against a wall with one hand — a classic romance drama move.
Walls are traditionally considered cold, yin spaces where spirits may pass through, so the expert warns you could end up "kissing a wandering spirit" instead.
-
Avoid visiting cemeteries, columbariums or certain temples together
Especially if you have trouble keeping your hands off each other. Being overly lovey-dovey could make lonely spirits jealous, and they might even try to break the couple up.
-
Watch what you say to your partner
According to the expert, it’s best to avoid phrases like “I miss you to death”, “I love you to death” or “I’d die for you”. Romantic as they may sound, mentioning “death” could offend wandering spirits.
-
Avoid watching movies together at really old cinemas
“Otherwise, you might find that there’s an extra person sitting next to you,” the expert said.
-
Try not to take the last train or last bus together
The period between 11pm and 1.30am is traditionally believed to have stronger yin energy, supposedly increasing your chances of a supernatural encounter.
-
If you’re walking the dog together, avoid parks and riversides
According to superstition, you could end up with an unexpected "third wheel" tagging along — and potentially bringing unwanted energy into your relationship.
-
Steer clear of video calls if possible
There's a belief that video calls could accidentally pick up mysterious signals from the spirit realm. Perhaps some calls really are better left unanswered.
