Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve probably seen the viral video of a family of three getting into a heated argument with the drinks stall owner at the coffee shop housing popular supper spot Chong Pang Nasi Lemak on Sembawang Road.

The Aug 30 dispute erupted after the family was told that their personal water bottle could not be placed on the table, reigniting debate over whether reusable bottles of plain water should be considered “outside drinks”.

This isn’t the first time such a rule has landed a local eatery in hot water. The same drinks stall made headlines earlier this year, while other privately operated coffee shops and casual eateries have also faced scrutiny over similar policies.
