Did you know that Best Rising Star winner Yunis To never expected herself to become an actress, much less win a Star Award?
The Malaysian actress, 29, got her start in showbiz as a contestant in Mediacorp's DJ talent-scouting contest, The Star Voice 2022, coming in at a distant ninth place.
Definitely a far cry from last night’s win, which saw her beating out fellow contenders including her Ch 8 drama Stranger in the Dark co-stars, Hank Wang and Yang Yan.
During her acceptance speech, Yunis also specially thanked one of the show’s veteran hosts and the night’s Best Audio Personality winner, Dennis Chew, for guiding her since starting out.
Dennis, who served as a mentor during the talent contest, was seen putting his hand over his heart and looking visibly touched.
While on stage, Yunis also gamely thanked herself before breaking out in a birthday song, ending her speech by saying, “This is the best birthday present I can get.” She will celebrate her big 3-0 birthday in a few days.
Yunis later excitedly told 8days.sg that her milestone birthday luck probably played a big part in her winning the coveted award.
That, and a special visit to a temple.
“Other than my upcoming birthday, I also visited a temple to pray for blessings, which I think increased my chances of winning,” she shares.
So how will she be celebrating her big win? According to Yunis, the celebrations will not be in Singapore but across the Causeway.
“I'm actually rushing back to Johor as my family and fan club are waiting to have a meal with me there,” she says.
