Local presenter Lin Youyi, 45, has a penchant for clean, minimalistic styles. That much was evident in her new home.

Youyi, who now does corporate training and is a presentation coach full-time, purchased the 1,000 sq ft walk-up apartment in 2019, but had rented the place out while she stayed in another rented one-bedroom condo in Tanjong Pagar. She's since moved back into this three-bedroom place she owns, which is located in a mature neighbourhood.

While she’s often seen in vibrant, colourful outfits all arranged by colour in her spacious walk-in wardrobe, no less Youyi’s aesthetic for her space is very much simple and tidy with a millennial-neutral colour palette, filled with brown and white tones, as seen when #JustSwipeLah host Seow Sin Nee visited for a home tour.

While showing off her reclining sofa, a super comfy spot where she takes her naps, Youyi reveals: “I’m not the kind that is very specific about the materials I want [for my furniture]. But I must find the colour comfortable to look at.”

To wit: Her table, television console, and cupboard, which are all in different shades of brown wood.

It looks like she scored a good deal on her furniture pieces as well. Her console, a secondary sofa in another room, and TV, all came free, courtesy of her friends.

“The point is that you want to have a lot of friends who moved earlier than you did. Either they are not bringing it to their new place, or they have new furniture so they don’t want it anymore,” she quips.

Interestingly, Youyi only needed 48 hours to decide to buy the apartment.

Youyi excitedly confirms the news, before explaining that her mum and pet dog, Kuro, had a huge part to play in her swift decision.

She says: “My mother was born with a ‘golden finger’, so the places my mother fancied have always been quite good."

In fact, it was her parents who spotted this listing online right after it went up and encouraged her to view it immediately because they liked it.

Instead of bringing a fengshui master to her new house, like many others would, Youyi got a free vibe check for her home.... from her pet dog, Kuro.

She was able to decide on the place so quickly because the spacious layout meant that Kuro would be able to run around freely. Her pup isn't used to relieving itself indoors, so having a small lawn right outside her doorstep meant she could easily open the door to let her dog out.

"We decided to bring my dog here, and after it came in, it also quite liked it. So when it felt relaxed, that’s when I thought I could really [buy this house]," she explains.

She trusted Kuro's instincts — the dog was relaxed, curious, and comfortable upon entering, and Youyi believed the energy felt right for both of them.

“I’m not any good at investing, but I’m good at following [advice]. So when my mother told me to buy it, I did,” she adds.

She’s satisfied with her new environment as well, sharing that her neighbours are nice, and everyone takes their dogs out for strolls, making the atmosphere feel very relaxed.

The previous owner had left behind a few small paintings of plants that Youyi eventually put up for sale, only to realise later that they were replicas of paintings that had been commissioned by Sir Stamford Raffles. “After some time passed, I went to the museum and saw similar paintings,” recalls Youyi, who reveals she has not found out the actual value of the prints that were once on her wall.

Well, she may have let the paintings go, but at least she’s got a place that perfectly suits her aesthetic now?
