Viral Police Officer Shows The Reality Of Playing In-Between During CNY

Chinese New Year is the peak season for card games, reunion dinners and testing your luck.

For 35-year-old police officer Benjamin Cheah, it was also the perfect time to demonstrate how not to gamble.

In a video posted to Instagram, Benjamin, who holds the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), shared what happened when he played a round of In-Between aka Phat Sam Sang, in Cantonese.

In-Between is a fast-paced card game notorious for turning a modest pot into a small fortune… or wiping you out in seconds.

In the game, two cards are revealed, and players bet that the third card will fall strictly in rank between them.

If it matches either card, the player typically has to pay double.

In Benjamin’s case, he was dealt an Ace and a King, giving him extremely high odds of winning.

Feeling confident, Benjamin pushed all his cash into the middle and boldly declared in Mandarin, “There is no chance that the card can be better than mine.”

Unfortunately for him, the third card was… he was dealt another Ace.

Of course, the room erupted into chaotic laughter as Benjamin sat there, visibly stunned.

Given his day job, one might say this would’ve been a good moment for him to tell us about the pitfalls of gambling, right?

Jokes aside, netizens were quick to empathise with many admitting they have had similar “all in” regrets during festive card sessions.

“When you have too much greed, greed comes for you,” read a comment.

If Benjamin looks familiar, it’s because this isn’t the first time he has made us laugh or go viral.

In 2015, he made headlines for rescuing a distressed cat stuck in a tree. In 2023, he impressed many by completing 105 push-ups in a minute.

The Nanyang Polytechnic alum has also appeared as a police officer in Mediacorp drama C.L.I.F and featured in the music video for Singapore’s SG50 theme song, “These Are The Days”.
