Man Spends S$741 On First Date At Imperial Treasure, Gets Ghosted After He Postponed Second Date

First dates can be expensive. But one man recently spent almost S$800 -- and still got ghosted.

A man in Singapore recently shared on Reddit to share what he described as his most expensive first date ever, after a woman he met on a dating app allegedly ordered an extravagant meal at Imperial Treasure Fine Teochew Cuisine at ION Orchard.

He said it was actually the woman was the one who chose the restaurant, and even asked him to pick her up from her workplace.

As the man doesn’t drive, he booked a Grab ride and added an extra stop to pick her up.

When they arrived at the restaurant, she allegedly handed him her bags to carry. Then came dinner, where she reportedly offered to order for both of them.

According to the man, he had never been to the restaurant before and wasn't familiar with its prices.

She ordered Australian lobster, poached live prawns, braised sea cucumber in oyster sauce and double-boiled fish maw soup with shark cartilage. There were also vegetables with crab meat, steamed rice, orange juice, pickles and pu-erh tea.

The bill, including service charge and GST, came up to a whopping S$741.

"I pay it. I don't ask her anything," he wrote.

No argument, or awkward discussion about splitting the bill.

And apparently, that still wasn't the end of his spending for the evening.

After dinner, the pair chatted for a while before deciding to call it a night.

That's when the woman reportedly asked him to book her a Grab ride home which cost S$42.

To be fair, the Redditor said he wasn't particularly upset at that point. "Still didn't feel bad. Maybe she enjoys expensive stuff," he wrote.

In total, the dinner and her ride home alone came to S$783, excluding the earlier Grab ride to pick her up.

And there was apparently going to be a second date.

During the following week, the man asked whether she'd like to catch a movie, though she insisted on watching it at the most expensive cinema option. And yes, she also wanted him to book another Grab ride to pick her up from home.

"I was sceptical, but I said okay and I'll let her know which date works for me," he wrote.

The woman suggested a date, which he agreed to, although he hadn't booked anything yet.

Then, two days before they were supposed to meet, he fell sick and told her they would have to reschedule.

According to him, she became angry, stopped replying and eventually ghosted him.

As expected, netizens had much to say.

"Only my mother and father are worth being treated to $700 meal," one commented.

Another wrote: "All the signs of a gold digger and you still went along with it. Take it as an expensive lesson and learn from this experience.”

Another suggested that the issue wasn't necessarily generosity, but his difficulty in setting boundaries. Others advised him to choose a reasonably priced restaurant for first dates and not feel pressured to pay simply to avoid an awkward situation.

The OP later admitted that this was exactly what had happened.

"I am scared of going on dates now. She was the one to order and I didn't know the prices of the dish. I didn't check before. That was my mistake. And also, I did what you mentioned. I didn't know how to say no when she asked. It was so awkward. And I was thinking I should be a gentleman. But it was already too much after I had just paid for the bill. And I had thought she genuinely liked me back too."

Of course, some Redditors were sceptical about the whole encounter.

"This story sounds unreal," wrote one commenter.

The man subsequently updated his post with a list of the dishes allegedly ordered at Imperial Treasure to explain how the bill could have reached S$741.

Umm… Maybe just stick to coffee dates in the future?

First date and already fine dining?
