Joi Chua & Kit Chan Recall Fleeing 1999 Taiwan Earthquake Together — And Their Friend Who Wouldn’t Leave Without Her Bra
For 27 years, Kit thought she had “saved” Joi during the quake. Turns out, she remembered it all wrong.
Singapore singers Joi Chua, 48, and Kit Chan, 53, go way back, and surviving a major earthquake together is part of their shared history.
Kit recently appeared on Joi’s podcast series Music Talk with Joi Chua, where the pair recalled being in Taiwan during the devastating 921 earthquake in 1999. The 7.3-magnitude quake was one of the deadliest in Taiwan’s history.
It was Joi’s first trip to Taiwan and then she wasn’t a singer yet.
Kit remembered Joi falling as they fled during the earthquake, and how she and her manager Mei Qin had “saved” her.
Except she'd been telling the story wrong for the past 27 years.
When the earthquake struck, Kit and Mei Qin panicked and grabbed Joi to run.
Joi, who had never experienced an earthquake before, was comparatively calm and a little dazed by what was happening.
As they pulled her along, Joi tripped over a road barrier.
“We didn't help her up. We just dragged her along the ground,” laughed Kit.
But Joi revealed that she had fallen because the two women were pulling her so quickly.
“So you’re saying we made you fall?” Kit exclaimed with a laugh.
“Yes!” replied Joi.
“I kept saying, ‘Joi fell down, [and] we saved her,’” said Kit.
“Save her, my foot! You guys pulled me!” Joi shot back.
And that wasn't the only unforgettable moment from that day.
Joi also spilled the tea on Mei Qin, who was sharing a room with Joi in the hotel.
When the earthquake struck, Kit ran over and yelled for them to get out.
Joi did. Mei Qin didn't.
“She said, ‘Wait, I need to grab something important,’” recalled Kit.
Turns out Mei Qin couldn't leave without two things: her passport... and her bra.
With things falling, pipes bursting and water everywhere, Kit was horrified.
“You could have died in those three minutes!” she recalled telling Mei Qin. “You might die for that bra! Was it worth it?”
After they made it downstairs, Mei Qin proceeded to put on her bra — in the middle of the road.
“I'll never forget that. I thought, who does that? You're not running for your life…” said Joi.
“She had to protect her modesty!”
Priorities, we guess.
