How Guo Liang Feels About Winning Star Awards Best Host Only Once After 13 Nominations
Every year at the Star Awards, a few artistes feel the pressure more than others.
Who? Those with nine Top 10 Most Popular Artistes wins, all chasing that final 10th trophy to become an All-Time Favourite Artiste.
This year, four are on the brink: Guo Liang, Paige Chua, Ya Hui and Desmond Tan.
In an interview with Shin Min Daily News, Guo Liang, 57, candidly shared that he does feel the stress of this final lap.
He is, however, deeply grateful, seeing this possible 10th win as a meaningful milestone shaped by years of audience support.
“Many people around me are saying: ‘This is the last one’. Since so many are saying that, I hope more people will vote," he said.
He joked that viewers are like 'parents' who raised him, so he hopes everyone will “vote with the same love they have for their children".
Previously, Guo Liang also admitted in an interview: “As you get closer to the finish line, you start to feel anxious.”
The host explained that as competition intensifies — 59 male artistes are in the running this year — votes are inevitably split, making outcomes more unpredictable.
While he's started to feel nervous, but has been trying to keep himself busy to ease his anxiety.
Still, Guo Liang said it’s impossible to think about voting results every minute: “I believe in this saying: Man proposes, heaven disposes.”
All he can do now is focus on doing his best, including campaigning for votes, interacting with audiences through live streams whenever possible, and putting in maximum effort.
He will also be hosting a trip to Korea soon and hopes to seize that opportunity to convince the 'uncles' and 'aunties' to vote for him.
Speaking of awards, netizens recently highlighted that the acclaimed host has been nominated for Best Host at the Star Awards more than 13 times but has only won once.
His only win was in 2009 for CelebriTEA Break.
Some netizens feel his hosting skills are widely recognised and that he has been unfairly overlooked over the years.
But Guo Liang seems pretty unfazed about that.
“In truth, I've never really counted how many nominations I had. I just know there have been quite a few," he said.
"Hearing people say my hosting skills are undeniable is already very comforting to me."
Guo Liang added that with his experience and seniority, he no longer needs an award to validate his abilities, though winning would certainly still bring him joy.
In his view, if he successfully wins his 10th Top 10 trophy this year, it will mark a major milestone in his career and serve as a summary of his 32 years in the industry.
However, he emphasized that it would not be the end, but rather a new beginning.
“I’ve always loved this job and cherish this career. I’ve worked hard for over 30 years, and I hope to continue accompanying audiences for another 30 years.”
