Ex-TVB Anchor Slams Unrealistic Scenes In Hit Drama The Queen Of The News 2
But isn’t it just that? A show?
Hit TVB drama Queen Of The News (2023) is back with a sequel, becoming the highest-rated show since 2021, watched by more than 1.8 million viewers.
However, it seems at least one person is skeptical about the on-screen realism.
The Queen Of The News 2 picks up from where it left off previously, and dives straight back into the cutthroat chaos of the newsroom. It marks the return of Charmaine Sheh, Selena Lee, and Samantha Ko in their roles, with Bosco Wang stepping in as the sequel’s main antagonist.
In real life, however, former TVB finance anchor Gigi Sun has called out a weather-reporting scene in the show, and revealed what the job is like, and even pointed out where the drama gets it wrong.
The 34-year-old who left TVB in early 2024 tapped into her own experience as a weather presenter to show what actually happens behind the scenes.
“What looks like a short few minutes on air actually requires going through every update from the Observatory, choosing the key points, then rewriting and refining everything to fit the show’s duration and the graphics,” she explained.
Since leaving broadcasting, Gigi went on to become a lecturer at City University of Hong Kong’s School of Media and Communication. She then joined the Education University of Hong Kong, where she was promoted to Assistant Programme Leader.
Gigi also took aim at Rosita Kwok’s breezy and carefree portrayal of a weather presenter, clarifying that no one is memorising scripts and that studios today are equipped with a 360-degree camera setup and teleprompters.
Gigi also didn’t mince her words when it came to the show’s “cute and flirty” weather-girl antics, saying , “Of course not! The weather report is part of a news programme. Accuracy is the priority. Opening an umbrella in the studio? No way!”
Netizens were divided, many having more questions for Gigi on what her time in the newsroom was like.
However, some felt Gigi should relax, reminding her that at the end of the day, it is just a show.
“Everyone knows it’s fictional and exaggerated. No one believes that’s how news is broadcast, right?” a netizen pointed out.
