Airline Staff In HK Made S$9K Selling Flight Details Of BTS And Other Celebs Illegally
The woman, who is now being investigated by the police, said she first did it as a favour for a friend then realised she could make money from it.
A female employee of an airline company is currently under investigation for leaking the flight information of celebs.
According to South Korean media, the airline staff is a 30-year-old woman, known only as "A". She is based in Hong Kong and is accused of illegally retrieving the flight itineraries of celebrities, then selling the information since 2023.
K-pop group BTS was just one of the groups who had their flight information leaked by A.
She reportedly used her company’s internal business system to access the flight bookings and only had to input the full name and birthdate of these celebs to find out their seat info.
She then sold the information to a third party.
It was revealed she had completed over a thousand of such transactions and made more than KRW10mil (S$9.2K).
A reportedly confessed: “At the beginning, I was only doing it as a favour to someone I know, and I did not receive any payment. I only began selling the information after."
The police are currently looking into other individuals who are suspected to have used illegal methods to leak similar data.
The case has since attracted much attention, with one Korean media outlet falsely reporting that A works for Hong Kong Airlines.
Hong Kong Airlines quickly refuted the reports, stating they have strict protocols to safeguard the private information of passengers.
All employees of Hong Kong Airlines have also been cleared of any involvement with the case.
