‘Accidentally Cremated’, ‘Zombie Catfish’, Joke Netizens Of Blackened Fish From Ayam Penyet Ria
A netizen’s FB post on her mysteriously dark, misshapen grilled catfish from an Indonesian restaurant has garnered hilarious responses online.
A Facebook post recently shared in the Heritage SG Food group over a “chao da” looking grilled catfish had netizens, ahem, roasting it. In just a day, the post has racked up over 140 reactions and 100 comments, with many poking fun at the fish’s almost sooty appearance.

Served atop waxed paper alongside rice, sambal, tempeh and veggies, the unusually long and oddly lumpy catfish appears heavily slathered in a thick, jet-black glaze — so much so that its head, fins and tail almost fuse into one long, alien-like shape.

But before you swear off the fish and accuse the kitchen of committing arson, the owner of the post says the fish is actually coated in kecap manis — that thick Indonesian sweet soy sauce that chars till caramelised on the grill.

Not that it matters, as netizens continue to bring on the jokes relentlessly.
One commenter quipped: “Instead of grilling, they accidentally cremate it…”
Others joked that it “looks like a giant turd” and “macam zombie catfish from Resident Evil”.

The fish is said to be the flame-grilled catfish or Ikan Lele Bakar with rice ($10.50) from casual Indonesian eatery Ayam Penyet Ria at Rivervale Mall. It has six outlets across Singapore.
What the dish looks like on the menu
The dark glaze on the fish as seen on the restaurant’s website is clearly intentional — though judging by the FB post, the real-life version appears somewhat… sunburnt.
