Retrenched Jetstar Asia Air Steward Turns Hawker, Sells Tasty Ipoh Curry Mee At Quiet Ubi Kopitiam

“I felt very sad,” says Kalvin Ng after Jetstar Asia’s sudden closure last year. Instead of joining another airline, the flight attendant of 10 years chose to sell Ipoh hor fun and curry noodles at a stall called OnlyMee.

When Jetstar Asia announced it would be shutting down last year, Kalvin Ng found himself at a crossroads. The youthful-looking 40-year-old with close to a decade of experience as an air steward, had rejoined the airline less than a year earlier before it all came to a grinding halt.

Instead of returning to the skies, Kalvin decided to pivot to the hawker trade. He set up OnlyMee last November, an Ipoh hor fun and curry mee stall located in an industrial coffeeshop in Ubi, selling a lean selection of noodles inspired by his family’s hawker business in Ipoh, Malaysia.
