Ex-Drag Content Creator Swaps Wigs For Hawker Life At Mum’s Mei Li Sotong Ball & Meatball
Once decked out in full glam makeup and wigs for his social media skits, Eric Lim now starts his days handling slippery cuttlefish at Hong Lim Market & Food Centre.
The 35-year-old former content creator works with his mum, Yang Mei Li, 66, at her takeaway stall, Mei Li Sotong Ball and Meatball, after struggling to secure a stable income from social media and conventional employment.
It was hardly the future Eric had pictured for himself.
Asked if he ever foresaw becoming a hawker, he laughs: “No. I actually saw myself just being with a rich man.”
Instead, the third-gen hawker now wakes at 6am and works beside his mum till around 3pm, helping to produce and sell the family’s handmade Teochew-style sotong balls.
“I still need to eat, pay my bills and pay for my insurance. I cannot be wearing a wig when nobody wants to hire me, right?” he says.
