TV Review: Michael Shannon And Michael B Jordan Are Book Burners In HBO's 'Fahrenheit 451'

It's the feel-good movie of the week. Not.

Boo to Fahrenheit 451 (HBO, StarHub Ch 601; HBO on Demand and HBO Go), an adaptation of Ray Bradbury’s 1953 classic novel set in a dystopian state where books are outlawed and incinerated, starring Michael B Jordan as a rising star ‘Fireman’, and Michael Shannon as his icy mentor.

Do we need another depressing reminder of how messed up the world is right now? Er, probably. So what else is new? Because the source material was so influential and because it has been around for sooo long, just about everything in it had either been reused by other works (see the Clive Owen-led Children of Men, Equilibrium, featuring a pre-Batman Christian Bale, and Black Mirror).

As such, this HBO version feels derivative. You know that ‘been there, done that’ feeling from watching last year’s Ghost in the Shell? Same thing here. Even Shannon looks like he’s rehashing the evil G-man role in The Shape of Water. File this under ‘Underwhelming’.
