The buzzword of the day is ‘ umbrage’. If you didn’t know that, fret not — we won’t take umbrage, but we’ll take some time to give you some context.

The word went viral yesterday (May 6) after a press conference announcing Singapore Press Holding’s (SPH) plans to restructure its media business to a not-for-profit entity. SPH CEO Ng Yat Chung used the term in his response to a Channel NewsAsia journalist’s question, a video of the exchange circulated like wildfire online… and now you’re all caught up.

Once the video went viral, the first thing that Singaporeans did was to Google the meaning of the word. You know, to make sure that it had nothing to do with Dolores Umbridge from Harry Potter. Yes, there was a sudden spike in Google searches in Singapore for 'umbrage' since yesterday (May 6). But don’t take our word for it.

First, it was ‘the cockles of my heart’. Now, it’s ‘umbrage’. Who says you only learn new words in school?

The second thing that enterprising Singaporeans did was, of course, to cash in on the trend. Less than a day after the press conference, ‘Umbrage’ tees are already on sale online. Meanwhile, businesses have also hopped on the ‘umbrage’ bandwagon to incorporate the word of the day into their marketing efforts.

Here's a look at all things umbrage you can splash your cash on.
