Chinatown is still getting dressed for the occasion, even if Chinese New Year festivities may be more pared down this year, with the festive street bazaar and countdown party cancelled due to Covid-19.

The CNY street light-up kicked off over the weekend at a closed-door opening ceremony that was livestreamed on Chinatown Festivals’ Facebook page on Jan 23. But if you missed it, here’s a glimpse at this year’s ox-picious decorations.

There are 888 lanterns of oxen, pomelos, blossom trees, gold coins and ingots and other designs running 880 metres along Eu Tong Sen Street and New Bridge Road. The street light-up is on from Jan 23 to Mar 12 at 7pm-12mn daily along New Bridge Road, Eu Tong Sen Street and South Bridge Road.

There are 88 oxen lanterns featured in this year’s light-up. And the one you definitely won’t miss is this year’s centerpiece, a towering 10m-tall ox (main photo) perched atop gold coins and ingots opposite Chinatown Point.

Over at South Bridge Road, there's a cutesy herd of zodiac animals arranged in the order they completed the Great Zodiac Race.

In the spirit of celebrating CNY safely this year, this year's festivities don't just happen offline. There's an array of virtual events happening from now until Feb 28, including Lunar New Year short films, pineapple tart making online workshops and more.
