Shannen Doherty Responds To Charmed Feud: “What’s Old Is New”
Shannen Doherty is more receptive to the 'Charmed' reboot than Rose McGowan and Holly Marie Combs.
The war of words between the cast of the new and old Charmed just got a little more interesting.
Shannen Doherty has weighed in on the online clash between Rose McGowan and Holly Marie Combs, the stars of the original supernatural drama Charmed, and Sarah Jeffrey, the star of the reboot series of the same title.
On Monday (Oct 12), Jeffrey hit back at both McGowan and Combs in response to a TikTok video they posted which shows the original cast members badmouthing the current series.
Jeffrey called McGowan and Combs’ criticisms “pathetic”, adding, "I truly hope they find happiness elsewhere, and not in the form of putting down other WOC [women of colour]. I would be embarrassed to behave this way. Peace and love to y’all. (sic)"
Jeffery, Melonie Diaz, and Madeleine Mantock play sisters with magic powers in Charmed, which premiered in 2018. The original series was launched in 1998 and lasted eight seasons.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Doherty said, “What’s old is new… and I think it’s wonderful a new generation can connect with three strong, powerful women, not to mention the many jobs the show provides.”
Doherty was the original original star of Charmed — she was on it for three seasons before she was replaced by McGowan. She has been generally supportive of the new version since it was first announced in 2018. “I’m intrigued by the idea that a new generation might be comforted, inspired like you all were,” Doherty tweeted then. “Charmed helped us all in some way.”
McGowan didn’t take Jeffrey’s criticisms lying down. “Dear Sarah Jeffery, I honestly had no idea who you were til you tweeted,” she wrote in an Instagram Story post. “I have been too busy fighting monsters & fighting for a massive cultural reset to notice who is in the reboot."
She also pointed out that her beef with the new Charmed is "about execs & producers & WB network trading on years of my work & name in such a cynical & obvious way — a money grab to cash in on the Charmed name." Rose McGowan IG Story CharmedCombs, too, responded to Jeffrey's remarks. “That's some bulls---. And a lot of it,” Combs tweeted. “Clearly. People speaking, excuse me, typing, derogatory accusations of a person's character despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary because of a difference in opinions about a tv show is just plain wrong. And also personal gain honey."
