Originally slated to hit cinemas in August, Peter Jackson’s highly-anticipated Beatles documentary Get Back — which follows the band’s recording of their final album, 1970’s Let It Be — will now premiere on Disney+ as a docu-series in November, the streaming service announced Thursday (June 17)

Because of the wealth of tremendous footage — more than 56 hours of archival material — Jackson has reviewed, which he has spent the past three years restoring and editing, The Beatles: Get Back will be presented as three separate episodes. Each episode is approximately two hours in length, rolling out over three days, Nov 25, 26 and 27, 2021, exclusively on Disney+.

“In many respects, Michael Lindsay-Hogg’s remarkable footage captured multiple storylines,” Jackson said in a statement. “The story of friends and of individuals. It is the story of human frailties and of a divine partnership. It is a detailed account of the creative process, with the crafting of iconic songs under pressure, set amid the social climate of early 1969. But it’s not nostalgia — it’s raw, honest, and human. Over six hours, you’ll get to know The Beatles with an intimacy that you never thought possible.”

According to the announcement, the docu-series is being made with the enthusiastic support of Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Yoko Ono Lennon and Olivia Harrison.

The previous non-fiction project by Jackson, who’s best known for his Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies, was They Shall Not Grow Old, a WWI documentary where groundbreaking SPFX was employed to restore 100-year-old footage. The Oscar-winning filmmaker is using the technology to spruce up the 50-year-old Let It Be’s behind-the-scenes footage. Jackson previewed a snippet of the remastered footage last year.
