Netflix Serves Up 'Samurai Gourmet', Another Foodie Show You Must Not Watch At Night

Watching people eat can be therapeutic.

If you’re fan of Solitary Gourmet and Midnight Diner: Tokyo Stories, you’ll definitely dig this manga-inspired food porn show. Veteran character actor Naoto Takenaka plays a just-retired salary man who has all the time in the world to wax lyrical about life and explore quaint eateries in his hood, with nary a care in the world. Since he’s no longer on the clock, he can afford to take it easy, like knocking back a beer in the day. (Shiok, man!) He likens his newfound freedom to that of his alter-ego, a ronin (a masterless samurai). It’s Ferris Bueller’s Day Off with food! It’s hard to explain but we find it strangely hypnotic, relaxing even, to watch this show before bedtime. Not so good though, if you’re on a diet. If that’s the case, you may want to boo this show.
